Baseball Betting Lines

04/21/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jason Marquis faces his former team for the first time this afternoon, when the Chicago Cubs continue their three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

Marquis, who spent the last three seasons pitching for St. Louis before signing a three-year, $21 million deal with Chicago this offseason, enters today's tilt on the heels of his first win as a Cub. On Monday he held the San Diego Padres to one run and three hits over six innings, improving to 1-1 on the year and lowering his ERA to 2.65.

The 28-year-old right-hander is 1-0 lifetime against the Cards with a 2.25 ERA in three games (one start).

St. Louis will counter with Anthony Reyes, who will be hoping for some run support when the takes the ball today. Reyes fell to 0-2 on the season Monday against Pittsburgh, as he surrendered three runs on six hits in five innings. The Cardinals, though, have managed just three runs in his two starts this season.

The 25-year-old right-hander, who has pitched to a 5.40 earned run average this season, is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in two outings (one start) against the Cubs.

In Friday's opener of this series, Preston Wilson hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to lift St. Louis to a 2-1 win.

Jim Edmonds scored on Wilson's blast for the Cardinals, who snapped a four- game slide and beat the Cubs for the fifth straight time.

Braden Looper (3-1) got the start for St. Louis and twirled seven strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks. Ryan Franklin worked a flawless eighth to preserve the lead, and Jason Isringhausen picked up his fourth save of the season after dodging trouble in the ninth.

Ted Lilly (1-2) was the tough-luck loser, yielding just two runs on four hits over seven frames for Chicago, which has dropped three of four.

Chicago won 11 of the 19 meetings with the Cardinals last season and are 21-15 in the series since the start of the 2005 campaign. The Cards have also struggled in the Windy City, where they have won in just six of their last 19 visits.
