Beckett has been out the last 56 games since being originally shelved on May 19. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on July 16 and made two rehab starts with Triple-A Pawtucket, posting a 4.50 earned run average with no record. The right-hander allowed seven hits, including a pair of homers, while fanning seven and walking one in eight innings.

Knuckleball specialist Tim Wakefield has been taking Beckett's regular turn in the rotation. The 30-year-old Beckett was just 1-1 with an inflated 7.29 ERA in eight starts before the injury. His lone win came back on April 10 at Kansas City in his second start of the season. He had signed a four-year, $68 million contract extension just five days earlier.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
