01/16/2007 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Roy and Gretchen Jackson, owners of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, and the University of Pennsylvania's Equine Hospital will receive the Special Eclipse Award for 2006.
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association announced on Tuesday that the Jacksons and the New Bolton Center are to be honored with the award for outstanding individual achievements in, or contributions to, the sport of Thoroughbred racing.
"We've tried to do the right thing from the start," said Roy Jackson. "It's been a surreal journey for us since the start of 2006 with a lot of ups and downs, but it is a real highlight in this journey to be recognized by the industry in this fashion. It's not just for ourselves, but also for Barbaro. He's been the one taking us on this journey."
The story of Barbaro is now well known. He won the Kentucky Derby by more than six lengths and was being hailed as a strong candidate to sweep the 2006 Triple Crown. Then early in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico he suffered a life threatening injury to his right hind leg.
The Jacksons decided to do everything possible to save his life. At the New Bolton Center Dr. Dean Richardson led a team in repairing the colt's leg.
"They have been remarkable throughout the whole process," noted Roy Jackson. "Dean Richardson has done a wonderful job in explaining Barbaro's condition to the general public in layman's terms. Barbaro has brought them to the forefront, but they've been able to do remarkable things through combined research between the medical school and the vet school. They are leaders in their field."
Barbaro remains at the New Bolton Center near the Jacksons' home in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He has been battling laminitis in his left hind foot since the summer and remains under constant observations.
The Special Eclipse Award will be presented at the 36th annual Eclipse Awards on Monday, January 22 at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
