Volquez to make season debut for Reds on Saturday

07/16/2010 - Cincinnati, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez is scheduled to make his season debut on Saturday against the Rockies.

Volquez, who has been out because of both Tommy John surgery and a 50-game suspension for a violation of the league's drug policy, last appeared in a major league game on June 1, 2009.

The 27-year-old lost about $120,000 of his $445,000 salary for the suspension, which was served while he recovered from his elbow injury. In six rehab starts in the minors, Volquez went 4-0 with a 1.45 earned run average.

In 42 career games for Cincinnati, Volquez is 21-8 with a 3.44 ERA. He was acquired from the Rangers before the 2008 season in a deal that sent Josh Hamilton to Texas.

Volquez is 24-19 with a 4.37 ERA in 62 games -- 58 starts -- over five seasons with the Rangers and Reds.
